Why are some of the Word Verification charcters really long, and others are really short?

.... Fecking dew. It also sucks when it's really cold and you're playing tennis and then it gets too hot and so you take your jacket off and when you get cold after you finish playing you go to put it back on again and it's so damp it's like a labrador that has odourless urine just peed on it.
